By Allen M. Alper Jr., Dr. Allen M. Alper Sr. and Andrew M. Alper
A record 20,162 people attended the PDAC 2008 International Convention, Trade Show and Investors Exchange at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in March. With raw materials in short supply and demand rapidly growing, this is one of the most exciting times to be involved in the mineral industry.
The Trade Show and Investors Exchange had 1001 exhibiting companies. Global exploration, development and mining advances were discussed. The conference was of great interest to investors, businessmen, miners, engineers, and scientists. It was an excellent time to renew friendships and get caught up on the latest news. There were so many social events to attend that it was impossible to go to all.
We have photographed and reported on some interesting companies below. We invite you to get more information by going to their websites. Next year PDAC 2009 will be held from March 1-4, 2009 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building.

Cluff Gold Cluff Gold plc is focused on the identification, acquisition and development of gold deposits in West Africa that are amenable to open-pit mining and low cost production techniques.
The Group has assembled a portfolio of mineral interests at various stages of development in Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone, Mali and Ghana. Cluff Gold progressed from being an explorer to a producer in Q1, 2008. The aim is to provide a steady progression of mines coming into production and to have the capacity to produce 300,000 ounces of gold annually.
Baomahun, Sierra Leone
Key points:
- Conditional agreement reached to buy remaining 40% stake at Baomahun, which would increase ownership to 100%
- Over 25,000m of core drilling planned this year
- 1,160,000 ounce resource established (JORC)
- Soil sampling and geophysics point to significant potential along strike
- Exploration currently underway, targeting existing and new areas
- Work underway to upgrade Baomahun Scoping Study into a pre-feasibility study

The Mt. Yaoure permit is located 40km northwest of Yamoussoukro, the political capital of Cote d'Ivoire, and covers a surface area of 417km2 including a 50 km2 mining permit. The licence area includes the Angovia Gold Mine which operated between 1998 and 2003. The mine reportedly produced over 180,000 ounces of gold during this period by heap leaching some 2 million tonnes of oxide material. The infrastructure in the area is good and includes a hydroelectric dam six kilometres from the Angovia mine site.

Brazauro Resources Corporation (TSX V: BZO) has gold exploration projects in the Pará Province of Brazil. Seventy-one core holes at its key property, Tocantinzinho (TZ) have outlined the most significant bulk-tonnage gold discovery in the vast Tapajós region. In December 2007 NCL Brasil Ltda. reported a 43-101 compliant indicated and inferred resource of 52 million tonnes @ 1.25 g/t for a total of >2.1million ounces of gold. The scoping study has also shown potential for positive economics at gold prices over $550/oz. At a rate of 3 million tonnes/year TZ will produce 128,000 ounces over a 13-year period at a cost of an estimated $368/oz. At a gold price of $550/oz., the project will have a NPV (5% discount) of $42 million and an IRR of 10%. This year Brazauro will continue with further infill drilling to transfer inferred ounces into the indicated category, increase the total reserve and use the core for more metallurgical testing. Brazauro continues exploration on the remaining landholdings at TZ and at their exploration at Crepori and Circulo (44,800 hectares combined), both situated along strike and to the NW of TZ. Uranium North has quickly become recognized as having the assets necessary to be considered a top tier Canadian uranium exploration company. The company holds 100% interest in 3 million acres of property located within the most prolific high-grade uranium basins in Canada. Historical information allowed us to focus on 5 project areas for our 2007 field program. The company’s flagship property, Amer Lake, located in the Thelon Basin, is host to a *6.7 million lb historical resource. Recent ground and airborne testing have confirmed the potential to expand the known historical resource substantially in 3 large uranium anomalous areas totaling over 30 km.
The South Baker property will be part of the 2008 exploration program with a focus on 2 of the 12 prospect areas; KAM and HAWK, both showing prospective targets.
Continuing ground testing to define drill targets will be the focus of the Carswell project in the Athabasca basin for the 2008 season.

Alexis Minerals Corporation
Alexis Minerals is a TSX listed Canadian-based exploration and development company exploring for both gold and base metals in over 1,000 sq. km. of prospective properties located in two mining camps, the Val d’Or and Rouyn-Noranda Mining Districts of NW Quebec, areas with “world class mine” discovery potential. The company has excellent potential, through exploration, for the discovery of individual new deposits, new deposit trends and new mining camps.
Alexis is currently developing one gold project into production at a scheduled production rate of 40,000 ounces of gold per year, the 100%-owned Lac Herbin Mine. The project will achieve commercial production in Q2-2008 and full scale production in Q4-2008. Total production in 2008 is estimated at over 27,000 ounces gold. In addition the company intends on advancing a second project, the 100% owned Lac Pelletier Mine, through underground exploration and bulk sampling, to a production decision during 2008. The project is expected to produce a further 45,000 ounces of gold per year when in operation. The strategy of mine development and gold production will generate significant cash flow to the company and support long term regional exploration, as Alexis strives to grow through new discovery
During 2008, the company will complete over 32,000 metres of surface drilling across the region and a further 40-50,000 metres of underground drilling at the Lac Herbin Mine. Alexis will process ore in 2008 at a local custom milling facility and intends on reopening its 100% owned and fully permitted 1400 tpd Aurbel gold mill in Val d’Or during 2009.
